Camphire International Horse Trials 2015

Camphire International Horse trials in Co. Waterford, attracted a large international entry. 45 combinations set off in the feature CIC3* course on Sunday over the  Mike Etherington-Smith designed course. Although the first days took place in glorious sunshine, the weather deteriorated rapidly on Saturday night, leaving very difficult ground conditions for Sunday.

Heavy overnight rain and a downpour during the class, made very testing conditions for the CIC3* feature event at Camphire. Surrey based Australian rider Christopher Burton with Nobilis 18 picked up 8 time penalties on the cross country to take the honours in the feature class.

Only one combination made it home in the time allowed, and that was Ireland’s junior Gold medalist  Cathal Daniels & Rioghan Rua, who finished on their dressage score, to take second place. Ireland’s Austin O’Connor & Kilpatrick Knight who had been lying in second position, had 10 time penalties and finished in third.

Australia’s  Christopher Burton again claimed the two top slots in the CCI2* with New Zealander Jesse Campbell taking third on Cleveland.. Burton set a record with Santano II by scoring the lowest score dressage score in international competition.

Very little (2.3 penalties) separated the top three in the CCI1* class, but Australia’s domination of the event continued with Emma Dougall & Fernhill Tabasco taking the pole position and Kevin McNab & Tomgar Hugo Boss taking second. Ireland’s Elizabeth Power took third.

Leading after the dressage, Ireland’s Clare Abbott & Glenkeeran River (by Crosstown Dancer) took the top position of the 45 starters in the CIC2*, finishing on a score of 42.6. New Zealand’s Dan Jocelyn & Beaucatcher took second, and Ireland’s Capt. Geoff Curran & River Derg took third.

21 combinations set out in the  CIC2*YR class. Ireland’s Cathal Daniels & the stallion Barnaboy Freeman pipped Alex Lee-Simpson & Bonza Rusty May by 0.4 points to take the honours, and team GB’s Natasha Brent & Mini Bubble took third slot.

Flora Harris & Cesano H took the honour’s for GB in the CIC1*, with dressage leader, Ireland’s Jodie O’Keeffe & Kachemire Le Beau taking second place. The SJ proved to be fairly decisive in this section. By producing one of the 10 clear rounds, followed by a faultless cross country, Flora Harris was able to edge ahead by 3.6 points. after Jodie O’Keefe picked up 8 penalties.  GB’s David Doel & Ricoshea finished in third.

Sophie Richards & SRS Adventure, led from the start to take the Horse Sport Ireland CICYH1* 6yo class, finishing on their dressage score of 35.5., beating Cathal Daniels & Sammy Davis Junior into second slot, only 0.1 of a point behind.
