Oliver Townend and Cooley Master Class were victorious in the second leg of the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing, so now Oli will head to this week’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials to try to win the third leg (Oli won the first leg at the Land Rover Burghley Horse September with Ballaghmor Class). To date only Pippa Funnel and Michael Jung have achieved the hat trick, so can Oli be the third to earn the Grand Slam title?
Standing in third going into showjumping at Kentucky, Oli produced a clear round to remain on his dressage score of 28.7 penalties. Australia’s Christopher Burton, and Nobilis 18 who were lying in second slot, dropped two rails in the show jumping, dropping them to ninth place. Last to go was the leading combination, Germany’s Michael Jung and, FischerRocana FST. Without a single fence in hand, Michael had no room for error, so a pole down clinched the victory for Oli Townend.
